Your Favormark page is safe for everyday use. However, qualified, ingenious, and determined individuals can break into any system. Yet, there aren't many such people in the world. Your bookmarks, phone and address books are not interesting targets for them. Just do not put anything on your page that might attract professional hackers:
- Do not store financial or identification data on your page (or on any Web site if you can help it). Credit card or driver license numbers should be kept close to the chest.
- Do not put on the Web any of your company or government secrets. There is no safe place for secrets on the Web.
- Do not challenge hackers. If you choose to store attractive information protected by password, do not make it widely known. For example, if you say in a chat room that you have the phone numbers of the world's most famous pop stars on your page but under password, you invite hackers to break into your page.
Here is a couple of precautions your can take to protect your data from casual hackers:
- Your password is your worst enemy. Most passwords are too easy to guess. For instance, your last name spelled backwards is not a good password.
- If you opened protected folders or modified your page at the public place, click the Exit button when you leave. As an added precaution, you can also make the browser forget what you did on the Web. With Internet Explorer, go to Tools | Internet Options and click Delete Files and Clear History buttons. With Netscape Navigator, select Edit | Preferences and click the Clear History button, then select Advanced | Cache on the same menu and press both Clear Cache buttons.
Sometimes you may want to allow select people read the contents of the protected folders on your page. You can create a read-only password that you can give to your friends and colleagues.
